1856 - Born on the 9th of January in Shelby County, Kentucky.
1878 - Graduated from West Point and commission as second lieutenant of 9th Cavalry, a black unit.
- Transferred to the 7th Cavalry at Fort Abraham Lincoln in the Dakota Territory in August.
1886 - Instructor of military science and tactics and taught mathematics at Southern Illinois University.
1889 - Returned to the 7th Cavalry.
1892 - He was promoted to first lieutenant.
1891 - Participated in the Pine Ridge, South Dakota campaign.
1894 - Bell became aide-de-camp to General James W. Forsyth and posted to the Department of California.
1897 - Transferred to Fort Apache, Arizona Territory and then to Vancouver Barracks, Washington.
1903 - He transferred to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas where he headed the Command and General Staff School.
1906 - Chief of Staff of the United States Army.
1907 - Appointed Chief of the Army General Staff.
1911 - Returned to Manila as military commander.
1917 - Bell was transferred to the Department of the East, and as commander.
- Commanded the Department of the East, and returned to his old headquarters, Governors Island.
1919 - James Franklin Bell died on the 8th of January.
