Beckley, John James

1757 - Born on the 4th of August in London.

1769 - At age twelve he was sent to Virginia to work as a scribe for a mercantile firm.

1783 - He had amassed 49,000 acres of rich, unoccupied land in the west, but it was tied up in litigation.

1789 - James Madison sponsored him as Clerk of the House.

1792 - Started a propaganda machine for the new Republican party.

1802-1807 - Ex officio librarian of Congress.

1807 - Died on the 8th of April.
