1760 – Born on the 1st of October in Fonthill, Wiltshire England.

1771 – At the age of eleven young Beckford inherited a princely fortune from his father.

1782 – He travelled in Italy.

1783 – He wrote a book on the subject Dreams, Waking Thoughts and Incidents.

1783 – He married Lady Margaret Gordon and spent his brief married life in Switzerland.

1784 – He became UK Member of Parliament.

1786 – His best-known work, the Gothic novel Vathek.

         – He was scandalized with the newspaper publication of letters, which indicated a homosexual.

         – Wrote a book on the subject Dreams, Waking Thoughts and Incidents.

1786 – Travelled in Spain and Portugal, and wrote his Portuguese Letters, which rank with his best work.

         – His best-known work, the Gothic novel Vathek.

1793 – He visited Portugal, where he lived for a while. Beckford’s fame, however, rests nearly as much upon his eccentric extravagances as a builder and collector as upon his literary efforts.

1806-1820 – He served as UK Member of Parliament.

1844 – Died on the 2nd of May in Landsdowne Hill, England.
