1932 - Born on March 15th in Wheeler, Texas. American astronaut, participant in the Apollo 12 mission, in which two long walks, totaling nearly eight hours, were made on the Moon's surface.

1955 - Bean entered the U.S. Navy upon graduation from the University of Texas, Austin.

         - Received a bachelor of science degree in aeronautical engineering from the University of Texas at Austin.

1963 - Served as a test pilot before entering the manned spaceflight program.

         - Selected to be the backup Command Pilot for Gemini 10 but was unsuccessful in securing an early Apollo flight assignment.

1969 - He participated in the Apollo 12 mission.

         - Captain Bean and Captain Pete Conrad landed in the moon's Ocean of Storms-after a flight of 250,000 miles.

1972 - Awarded an honorary doctorate of science from Texas Wesleyan College.

1973 - Bean was commander of the Skylab 3 mission, during which he, Owen K. Garriott, and Jack R. Lousma formed the second crew to occupy the orbiting laboratory.

1974 - Presented an honorary doctorate of engineering science degree from the University of Akron (Ohio).

         - Commissioned in the US Navy and assigned to a jet attack squadron at the Naval Air Station in Jacksonville, Florida.

1975 - Bean retired from the Navy but remained with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration as chief of the astronaut candidate operations and training group.

1981 - Retired from NASA and thereafter became a space painter of some repute.
