1842 - John Coalter Bates was born 26th of August in St. Charles County, Missouri.
Educated at Washington University of St. Louis.
1906 - Served as Chief of Staff of the United States Army.
- He fought in the American Civil War with the U.S. 11th Infantry Regiment.
1892 - Served on the Indian Frontier and appointed as colonel of the Second United States Infantry.
1899 - Became the military Governor of Cienfuegos.
1900-1901 - Commanded the 1st Division, VIII Corps, conducted operations against insurgents in southern Luzon.
1901-1904 - Bates commanded a provisional division in maneuvers at Fort Riley.
1906 - Served as the chief of staff of the United States Army.
- Promoted to lieutenant general and later retired from active service in April.
1919 - General Bates died in San Diego, California on 4th of February.
