Bashir, Abu Bakar (Abdus Somad)

1938 - Abu Bakar Bashir was born 17th of August in Jombang, East Java Indonesia.

1959 - He graduated from Gontor Islamic boarding school in Jombang.

1972 - He runs the Al-Mukmin boarding school in Ngruki, Central Java.

1983 - Bashir and Sungkar were arrested allegedly for urging Sharia.

1999 - Returned to Indonesia, joined the Indonesian Mujahedeen Council, and renewed his call for Sharia.

2001 - He has claimed the the 9/11 attacks were a false flag attack by America and Israel to provide an excuse to attack Muslims in Afghanistan and Iraq.

2002 - USA government demanded Indonesia turn over Bashir.

2003 - Formally charged by the Indonesian government with treason.

2004 - Arrested by the Indonesian authorities and charged with involvement in the bomb attack on the Marriott

Hotel in Jakarta.

         - He was convicted of conspiracy in connection with 2002 terrorist attacks on Bali and Jakarta.

         - Abu Bakar Bashir is the spiritual leader of Jemaah Islamiyah.
