– As secretary of the state of Rhode Island he rearranged and classified the state records and prepared bibliographies and compilations on state history.
1848 – Made his greatest contribution to linguistics with his pioneer work, Dictionary of Americanisms: A Glossary of Words and Phrases, Usually Regarded as Peculiar to the United States.
1850-1853 – Appointed commissioner for the survey of the boundary between the United States and Mexico.
1854 – He wrote as a result ‘Personal Narrative of Explorations and Incidents in Texas, New Mexico, California, Sonora and Chihuahua.., 2 vol.’.
