1972 - Barshefsky is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin.

1993-1999 - Served as the Deputy United States Trade Representative.

1996-1997 - Became the acting US Trade Representative.

1999 - Negotiator with China's Zhu Rongji, laying out the terms for China's eventual entry into the World Trade Organization.

1997-2001 - Ambassador Barshefsky became the US Trade Representative.
