1956 - José Manuel Durão Barroso was born in Lisbon, 23rd of March.

1985 - Barroso was named Under-Secretary of State at the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
1987-1992 - Elevated to Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation.
1990 - He was the driving force behind the Bicesse Accords.
1992-1995 - Promoted to the post of Minister of Foreign Affairs.
1995 - Barroso was elected as a representative for Lisbon in the Assembly of the Republic.
- Became chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee.
1998 - He graduated in Georgetown Leadership Seminar.
1999 - Elected president of his political party, PSD, and thus became Leader of the Opposition.
2002-2004 - Barroso served as Prime Minister of Portugal.
2004 - Barroso resigned to become President-designate of the European Commission.
