1956 – José Manuel Durão Barroso was born in Lisbon, 23rd of March.

Finished Social Sciences from the University of Geneva in Switzerland.


1985 – Barroso was named Under-Secretary of State at the Ministry of Internal Affairs.


1987-1992 – Elevated to Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation.


1990 – He was the driving force behind the Bicesse Accords.


1992-1995 – Promoted to the post of Minister of Foreign Affairs.


1995 – Barroso was elected as a representative for Lisbon in the Assembly of the Republic.


         – Became chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee.


1998 – He graduated in Georgetown Leadership Seminar.


1999 – Elected president of his political party, PSD, and thus became Leader of the Opposition.


2002-2004 – Barroso served as Prime Minister of Portugal.


2004 – Barroso resigned to become President-designate of the European Commission.
