1849 - Born in Ostemo, Kalamazoo County, Michigan on September 23rd. American explorer and geographer.

         - Mr. Baker has contributed mathematical papers to the scientific journals, and has been one of the secretaries of the Philosophical society, Washington.

1870 - Educated at Kalamazoo College and the University of Michigan, where he graduated.

         - He was made professor of mathematics in Albion College.

1871 - He was a tutor of mathematics in the University of Michigan.

1873 - Became connected with the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey.

1882-1884 - Was in charge of the Los Angeles magnetic observatory, established by the United States signal service.

1886 - Attained the grade of assistant geographer.

         - He spent several years in explorations and surveys in Alaska, and traversed the entire Pacific coast from southern California to the Arctic ocean.
