– He was made professor of mathematics in Albion College.
1871 – He was a tutor of mathematics in the University of Michigan.
1873 – Became connected with the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey.
1882-1884 – Was in charge of the Los Angeles magnetic observatory, established by the United States signal service.
1886 – Attained the grade of assistant geographer.
