Baird, Spencer Fullerton

1823 – Born on the 3rd of February in Reading, Pennsylvania.

1840 – He was graduated at Dickinson College.

1842 – Spencer followed a course at the College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York.

1845 – Became professor of natural sciences in Dickinson College.

1950 – Appointed assistant secretary of the Smithsonian Institution.

1857 – Published "Catalogue of North American Mammals".

1858 – Published the "Catalogue of North American Birds".

1871 – United States commissioner of fish and fisheries.

1874-1884 – He was co-author of A History of North American Birds.

1878 – Baird succeeded to the full secretary ship.

1887 – Spencer Fullerton Baird died 19th of August at the great marine biological laboratory at Woods Hole, Massachusetts.

Baird’s sandpiper and Baird’s sparrow are named in his honour.
