Avedon, Richard
1923 - Richard Avedon, born on the 15th of May in New York, New York, U.S. American photographer gained renown as the revolutionary fashion photographer who placed his models in candid and dramatic yet casual situations instead of the rigid, formal poses that had been the norm and in the process introduced the concept of the supermodel.
1942 - He started as a photographer for the Merchant Marines, taking identification pictures of the crewmen with his Rolleiflex camera given to him by his father as a going-away present.
1944 - Began working as an advertising photographer for a department store, but was quickly discovered by Alexey Brodovitch, the art director for the fashion magazine Harper's Bazaar.
- Married Dorcas Nowell, a model known professionally as Doe Avedon. After five years, they divorced.
1946 - He had set up his own studio and began providing images for magazines including Vogue and Life.
1951 - Married Evelyn Franklin. They also separated, but the couple had had one son, John. Avedon's nephew was martial arts movie star Loren Avedon.
1966 - Left Harper's Bazaar to work as a staff photographer for Vogue magazine.
1992 - Became the first staff photographer for The New Yorker.
1993 - He has won the award for his photography, including the International Center of Photography Master of Photography Award.
1994 - Won the Prix Nadar in for his photobook Evidence.
2003 - Won the Royal Photographic Society 150th Anniversary Medal.
2004 - On the 25th of September, he suffered a brain hemorrhage in San Antonio, Texas while shooting an assignment for The New Yorker.
- He died in San Antonio on the 1st of October. At the time of his death, Avedon was working on a new project titled On Democracy to focus on the run-up to the U.S. presidential election.
