1960 - He was a member of the soul band Percy Sledge and frequently played with bluesmen such as B.B. King.

1981 - As a member of the Reagan administration, Atwater gave an anonymous interview to historian Alexander P. Lamis.

- As chairman was short, he was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor.
