1912 - Born on March 5th in London. British newspaper editor, as editor of The Observer, was largely responsible for turning the paper's viewpoint from a conservative, establishment-supporting one to espousal of a number of liberal causes, including anti-colonialism, human rights, and prison reform.

1944 - He was decorated with the Croix de Guerre.

1945 - Married to Melanie Mathilda Elena Hauser, daughter of Philip Hauser, on August 1st.

         - He was a foreign correspondent for The Observer.

1947 - He was the proprietor/editor of The Observer.

1952 - Married to Bridget Aphra Wreford, daughter of Major Cyril Wreford, on February 28th.

1994 - He was invested as a Companion of Honour (C.H.).

2001 - Died on December 7th in London.
