Arce, Manuel Jose
1787 - Born on the 1st of January in San Salvador.
1801 - He was sent to Guatemala to continue his education.
1807 - He began the study of medicine at the Universidad de San Carlos de Borromeo, but these studies were interrupted, when he was called back to the family estates because of the health of his father.
1808 - In December, in San Salvador he married Felipa de Aranzamendi y Aguiar.
1811 - Arce was an early participant in the movement for independence from Spain, joining in the first Cry for Independence on the 5th of November in San Salvador.
1814 - Arce was also involved in a second insurrection that began on the 22nd of January. This cost him four years in prison.
1822 - In April, Colonel Manuel Arzú, in command of Guaemalan troops supporting annexation to Mexico, occupied the Salvadoran cities of Santa Ana and Sonsonate.
- On the 3rd of June, Arzú entered San Salvador, reaching the Plaza Major.
1823 - His forces was defeated.
- In October, he left the United States to return to El Salvador.
- In October, Arce was elected a member of the executive triumvirate of Central America, in absentia.
1824 - He took up this position on the 15th of March.
- His return to the country.
1828 - He called on Vice President Mariano Beltranena y Llano to exercise the functions of president temporarily. When Arce wanted to resume the office, Beltranena refused to turn it over.
1832 - He was in Soconusco, where he organized a military expedition against the federal government of Francisco Morazán.
- His force was defeated on the 24th of February.
1842 - He did not finally return to El Salvador.
1844 - In April and May, he directed some armed attempts to overthrow General Francisco Malespín in El Salvador.
1845 - He returned again to the country.
1846 - He left politics for private life, working on his book Brief Indications for the Reorganization of Central America.
1847 - Died in poverty in San Salvador on the 14th of December.
