1934 – Born on the 8th of June in Taisha, Shimane, Japan.
1958 – At the request of Takeshita, who at the time was seeking to move from the Shimane Prefectural Assembly to the House of Representatives, he left Waseda University and became Takeshita’s secretary in March.
1964 – He was reelected three times and consolidated his base as a budding politician; in the Cabinet of Prime Minister Eisaku Sato.
1966 – Takeshita won election to the Lower House in his first attempt in May, and he went on to serve as Takeshita’s secretary for eight years.
– He was appointed president of the Taisha Fishery Cooperative, a post his father once filled.
1986 – He stood as a candidate from the Shimane Prefectural constituency in the Upper House election of July and scored an overwhelming victory.
1989 – He has held important posts back home in Shimane Prefecture, including chairman of the LDP’s Federation of Shimane Prefecture.
1991 – Became Parliamentary Vice-Minister of Finance, which brought him into contact with national fiscal administration.
1994 – Appointed Chairman of the House of Councillors Committee on Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries.
1995 – Chairman of the Shimane Federation of Land Improvement Associations.
– Advisor to the Shimane Federation of Fisheries Cooperative Associations.
1998 – In recognition of his achievements, he was appointed Upper House Secretary General of the LDP when the Obuchi Cabinet was inaugurated in July and supported the administration as the party’s virtual leader in the Upper House.
1999 – Appointed Chief Cabinet Secretary.
