1851 - Born on April 17th in Marshalltown, Iowa. American baseball player and manager who played professionally for 27 years and was still in his team's regular lineup at the age of 46.

1871 - He signed his first professional contract to play for the Rockford team, the same year Spalding and Ross departed to play in Boston.

1876 - During his 22-year career as a first baseman for the Chicago White Stockings, he compiled a lifetime batting average of ·334 and amassed 3041 total hits.

1879-1897 - He served as player-manager for Chicago for 19 years.

1898 - He managed the New York Giants.
 
1922 - Died on April 14th in Chicago, Illinois.

1939 - He was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
