1910 - Born on June 4th in Burleson, Johnson County, Texas. American businessman and politician.

1932 - Was a member of Texas state house of representatives.

1935 - Married to Ollie Mae Rawlins on April 10th.

1953-1954 - He had held a number of important government posts in Texas and Washington, including secretary of the Navy, and deputy secretary of defense.

1955 - Received the Medal of Freedom.

1957 - Became the U.S. Secretary of the Treasury.

         - A firm believer like Eisenhower in fiscal restraint, he attempted to hold federal spending within narrow limits and to balance the budget.

1961 - He became a partner with Carl M. Loeb, Rhoades, and Company.

1987 - Pleaded guilty to charges of evading taxes by illegally operating an offshore bank; sentenced to jail, house arrest, and probation.

1989 - Died of complications from surgery on cancer of the esophagus on August 14th in New York.
