1971 - She earned her Bachelors of Arts degree graduating Cum Laude.

 

1982 - She won an Associated Press Award for Excellence and was nominated for an Emmy Award for her reporting of guerilla activities in El Salvador.

 

1993 - She was named Director of the Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight.

 

1997 - She was appointed as Administrator of the Small Business Administration by President Bill Clinton and was the first hispanic woman and Puerto Rican that served as an executive officer in a President's Cabinet.

 

2000 - She was elected to the Board of Overseers of Harvard University.

 

2004 - She was named official spokeswoman for Senator John Kerry.
