1802 - Horatio Allen was born in Schenectady, New York on May 10, 1802.
1823 - He graduated from Columbia and was appointed the Delaware and Hudson Canal Company as chief engineer.
1828 - He was sent to England to buy locomotives for the canal company's projected railway.
1829 - He assembled the first steam locomotive to run in America.
1829-1834 - He was the chief engineer of the South Carolina Canal and Rail Road Company.
1838-1842 - He was principal assistant engineer of the croton aqueduct.
1872-1873 - He was the president of the American Society of Civil Engineers.
1889 - He died on December 31, 1889.
