Aliyev, Heidar Ali Rza ogly (Heydar Aliyev)
1923 - Aliyev was born Azerbaijani on May 10, 1923.
1944 - Became a staff of the Azerbaijani Committee of State Security.
1964 - Promoted to Deputy Chairman of Azerbaijani Committee of State Security.
1967 - Became the Chairman of Azerbaijani Committee of State Security.
1969 - Appointed as First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Azerbaijani Communist Party.
1982 - Promoted by Yuri Andropov as Deputy Prime Minister of the Soviet Union.
1991 - Became the Chairman of the Supreme Majlis of the Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic.
1992 - Appointed as Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Council of Azerbaijan.
1993 - After Abulfaz Elchibey was overthrown by a coup d'etat, Aliyev became the acting president. On June 24, 1993 he was elected as President of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
1995 - Assassins tried to kill Aliyev but their plan failed.
1997 - Signed a huge contract with the international oil consortium Azerbaijan International Operating Company.
1999 - Had a major heart bypass operation in the United States at the Cleveland Clinic.
2003 - During a live appearance in a television, he collapsed while giving a speech and on August 6, 2003 he undego treatment for congestive heart failure and kidney problems. On December 12, 2003, Aliyev died.
