1910 – Ali was born in Rajasthan on April 4, 1910.
1921 – Studied at Allahabad University and later joined the freedom struggle.
1936-1948 – Became Office Secretary and then Permanent Secretary of the AICC.
1950-1952 – Elected as a member of the Provisional Parliament.
1958-1962 – Became General Secretary and Chief Editor of the AICC Economic Review.
1964-1969 – Re-elected as General Secretary and was appointed again as Chief Editor of the AICC Economic Review.
1971-1973 – Elected as President of the Indian National Congress.
1977-1980 – Became Governor of Maharashtra.
1980-1982 – Became Governor of Tamil Nadu.
1985 – Became Chairman of the Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya Samiti.
1990 – Became Chairman of the Gandhi National Memorial Fund, Chairman Sardar Patel Memorial Trust and Council for Communal Harmony.
1992-1996 – Elected as Chairman Rajghat Samadhi Committee in New Delhi.
