1910 - Ali was born in Rajasthan on April 4, 1910.

1921 - Studied at Allahabad University and later joined the freedom struggle.

1936-1948 - Became Office Secretary and then Permanent Secretary of the AICC.

1950-1952 - Elected as a member of the Provisional Parliament.

1958-1962 - Became General Secretary and Chief Editor of the AICC Economic Review.

1964-1969 - Re-elected as General Secretary and was appointed again as Chief Editor of the AICC Economic Review.

1971-1973 - Elected as President of the Indian National Congress.

1977-1980 - Became Governor of Maharashtra.

1980-1982 - Became Governor of Tamil Nadu.

1985 - Became Chairman of the Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya Samiti.

1990 - Became Chairman of the Gandhi National Memorial Fund, Chairman Sardar Patel Memorial Trust and Council for Communal Harmony.

1992-1996 - Elected as Chairman Rajghat Samadhi Committee in New Delhi.
