849 – Alfred was born at Wantage.

854 – He was sent to Rome and anointed him as king by Pope Leo IV.

866 – The public life of Alfred began.

868 – He insuccessfully attempted to keep the invading Danes out of the adjoining kingdom of the Mercia. He married Ealswith.

871-899 – He served as the King of the Southern Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Wessex.

893 – He took up a position from where he could observe both forces.

899 – He died on October 26, 899.
