Alfonsin, Raul (Raul Ricardo Alfonsin Foulkes)
1926 - Raul Alfonsin was born in Chascomus on the 13th of March.
1945 - He studied at military and law school and joined the Radical Union Party.
1950 - He obtained a law degree from the National University of La Plata and founded a newspaper El Imparcial in Chascomus.
1951-1962 - He served in local government.
1953 - He was imprisoned by the Peron government for his politicalactivities.
1963 - He was elected to the national parliament under a UCr president.
1973 - He failed to run for the UCR nomination in the presidential election.
1981 - He wrote La cuestion Argentina and cofounded the Permanent Assembly for Human Rights.
1983-1989 - He served as President of Argentina from December 10, 1983 to July 9, 1989.
1985 - He negotiated loans from the International Monetary Fund and introduced an economic program, the Austral Plan.
1986 - He was co-recipient of the Council of Europe's Human Rights Prize.
1992 - He established the Argentine Foundation for the Freedom of Information and servedas a member of the South American Peace Commission ans as a vice-president of the Socialist International.
