1883-1887 – He became a member of the Missouri State House of Representatives.

1891-1892 – He became a mayor of Gallatin, Missouri.

1901-1907 – He became a judge of the seventh Judicial Circuit of Missouri.

1907-1919 – He was elected as a Democrat to the Sixtieth and to the six succedding Congresses from March 4, 1907 to December 15, 1919.

1919-1921 – He became a United States Secretary of Commerce in the Cabinet of President Wilson from December 16, 1919 to March 4, 1921.

1922 – He was delegated at large to the Missouri State Constitutional Convention.

1936 – He died in Gallatin, Missouri on the 27th of February.
