1939 - Alexander was born in Boston, Massachusetts on the 28th of October.
1952 - Received her secondary education at the Beaver Country Day School.
1953 - Attended Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, New York while she continue her acting.
1954 - Spent her last years in college at University of Edinburgh in Scotland where she participated in the Edinburgh University Dramatic Society.
1962 - Married Robert Alexander on the 23rd of July.
1969 - Won the 1969 Broadway Tony Award Best Supporting or Featured Actress for "The Great White Hope".
1974 - Divorved her husband Robert Alexander.
1975 - Married Edwin Sherin on the 29th of March.
1988 - Received the Women's International Center Living Legacy Award.
1993 - Appointed by President Clinton, she became chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts.
1996 - Invited to be the commencement speaker for Duke University's Class of 1996.
1997 - Invited to be the commencement speaker for Bennington College's Class of 1997.
1999 - Invited to be the commencement speaker for Smith College's Class of 1999.
2000 - Published her book entitled Command Performance: an Actress in the Theater of Politics (2000).
2005 - Alexander won an Emmy Award for Best Supporting Actress in a TV Movie/Miniseries.
