1909 - Alegria was born in Sartimbamba, La Libertad on November 4, 1909.

 

1929 - Attended University of Trujillo and worked as a journalist for El Norte newspaper.

 

1930 - Became a member of the Aprista movement.

 

1934 - Exiled to Chile for his involvement in political activities.

 

1935 - Wrote the novel entitled The Golden Serpent.

 

1938 - Wrote the novel entitled The Hungry Dogs.

 

1941-1948 - Went to New York and became a teacher at the University of Puerto Rico. Wrote the novel entitled Broad and Alien is the World.

 

1957 - Returned to Peru and joined President Belaunde Terry's Accion Popular party.

 

1963 - Elected to the Chamber of Deputies.

 

1967 - Died in Trujillo on February 17, 1967.
