1934 – Born on the 24th of August in Garoua, Cameroon.
1940 – He entered the politics of French Cameroun.
1960 – He was elected president of Cameroon when it gained independence.
– He experienced a rebellion from a group known as the Union of the Peoples of Cameroon.
1965 – He was reelected, gradually establishing the complete dominance of his own party and outlawing all others.
1970 – He created an unpopular constitution which ended the autonomy of British Cameroon and established unitary rule.
– He ruled Cameroon under a dictatorial leadership and his country became the most stable in Africa.
1982 – He resigned, ostensibly for health reasons, on the 6th of November.
1983 – He had a major feud with his successor, Paul Biya.
1984 – He had fled the country and been sentenced to death in absentia for participation in a plot against Biya.
1989 – He died on the 30th of November in Dekar, Senegal.
