1807 - May 28, born in Môtier in the canton of Fribourg, Switzerland.
1827 - 1830 - Attended the University of Munich. He received the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Erlangenin 1829 and recieved his medical degree from the University of Erlangen in 1830.
1831 - November, he went to Paris to study comparative anatomy under Cuvier, the most famous naturalist in Europe.
1836 - The Wollaston medal was awarded to him by the council of that society for his work on fossil Ichthyology.
1846 - 1848 - Went to the United States and accepted professorship at Harvard University.
1859 - 1860 - Founded the Museum of Comparative Zoology.
1863 - He was the founding member of "National Academy of Sciences" and also appointed as a regent of "The Smithsonian Institution".
1873 - He died in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
