1238 – He married Matilda, the heiress of Boulogne.

1246 – He was appointed to succeed his brother due to a conflict between Sancho II
           and the church.

1248 – He became king after his brother’s death.

1253 – He abdicated from the county of Boulogne and later divorced Matilda.

1254 – He held the first session of the Cortes, a general assembly comprising the
           nobility in the city of Leiria.

      –   He also made laws intended to restrain the upper classes from abusing the
          least favoured part of the population.

1279 – He died on the 16th of February in Alcobaca, Portugal.
