1919 - Born March 3rd in Vrededorp, Johannesburg. He is a member of the Society of Authors and of the International PEN.

        - One of South Africa's most prominent black writers, his work deals with political and social issues, especially with racism.
 
1928 - He received education with eagerness that enabled him to make up for lost time and race ahead.

1938 - Attended St. Peter's College in Johannesburg and the Teachers' Training College at Petersburg.

         - He edited the college magazine and began writing and publishing verse in the Bantu World. His dream was to go to England, but the chances of his earning the money for passage appeared hopeless.

1939 - He got a job as a ship's stoker and spent the next two years traveling around the world that led him to England and freedom. He devoted himself to writing.

         - Taught for a year in Cape Town and then worked briefly in Durban as a magazine editor.
 
1942 - Married Dorothy Pennington that lasted for six years.

         - Wrote his story collection " Dark Testament".
 
1946 - His novel,  "Mine Boy" one of the first works to bring him to critical attention.

1948 - He married Daphne Elizabeth Miller, an artist, on June 1st.

1954 - His memoir, "Tell Freedom" deal in part with apartheid.

1956 - He settled in Jamaica and wrote the novel, "A Wreath for Udomo".

1959 - Moved his family permanently to Kingston due to an assignment in Jamaica.  

1965 - Another novel, "A Night of Their Own".

1966 - He wrote "This Island Now", the only one of his novels not set in Africa.

1985 - Wrote the novel, "The View from Coyaba".
