1938 – Born on the 26th of June in Buffalo, New York.

1959 – He went on to pursue studies at Union College in Schenectady, New York and he
            obtained his bachelor’s degree.

1964 – He obtained his bachelor’s degree.

       – He moved to Honolulu, Hawaii to become a public school teacher at various
          elementary and high schools

1970 – He participated in a political campaign, having sought the Democratic nomination
            to run for the United States Senate.

1974 – He studied at the University of Hawaii at Manoa where he obtained his doctorate.

1975 – He ran for the Hawaii State House of Representatives where he served for four years.

1979 – He moved to the upper chamber winning a seat in the Hawaii State Senate.

1986 – He was elected in a September special election to complete Heftel’s unexpired term.

       – He served in Congress.

1988 – He set his sights on a seat of the Honolulu City Council.

1990 – He ran again for Congress and won and has since been re-elected eight times.

2006 – He garnered 69% of the vote against his Republican opponent Richard "Noah" Hough, an Iraq
           War veteran.

       – He currently resides in Honolulu, Hawaii.
