Spanish Catalan Surrealist painter
1904 - Born on the 11th of May in the town of Figueres, in the Empordà region close to the French border in Catalonia, Spain.
1916 - Dalí discovered modern painting on a summer vacation to Cadaqués with the family of Ramon Pichot.
1919 - He had his first public exhibition at the Municipal Theater in Figueres.
1921 - Dalí's mother died of breast cancer when he was sixteen years old. His mother's death "was the greatest blow I had experienced in my life.
1922 - Moved into the Residencia de estudiantes in Madrid and studied at the San Fernando School of Fine Arts.
1926 - Expelled from the academy shortly before his final exams.
1929 - He collaborated with the surrealistic film director Luis Buñuel on the short film Un chien andalou.
1931 - Painted one of his most famous works, The Persistence of Memory.
He became a friend to the historian and scientist Alexandre Deulofeu, also born in Empordà as himself.
1940 - As World War II started in Europe, Dalí and Gala moved to the United States.
1942 - He published his autobiography, The Secret Life of Salvador Dalí.
1949 - Dalí spent his remaining years back in his beloved Catalonia.
1960 - Worked on the Dalí Theatre and Museum in his hometown of Figueres.
1969 - He was responsible for creating the advertising aspect of the Eurovision Song Contest.
1982 - King Juan Carlos of Spain bestowed on Dalí the title Marquis of Pubol.
1989 - He died of heart failure at Figueres on 23rd of January, and was buried in the crypt of his Teatro Museo in Figueres.
