US Communist, journalist, and spy

 

member of US Communist Party 1923-1938

 

before House Un-American Activities Committee 1948, accused Alger Hiss of having been member of Communist spying ring and having passed secret papers to Whittaker Chambers for transmission to Soviet Union

 

produced copies of State Department documents typed on Alger Hiss' typewriter and produced "pumpkin papers" (microfilms allegedly supplied by Alger Hiss and hidden inside pumpkin on Whittaker Chambers' farm)

 

testified against Alger Hiss, leading to Hiss' conviction for perjury 1950

 

wrote autobiography "Witness" 1952
