1864 - Born in Diamond, Missouri. An American agricultural scientist, chemist, and inventor.

 

1887 - Accepted into Simpson College.

 

1891 - Transferred from Simpson College to Iowa State University. He became the first black student and the first black faculty member at ISU.

 

1896 - Accepted the invitation of Booker Washington to lead the Agriculture Department at Turkegee University. Developed more than three hundred new uses for peanuts, revitalizing Southern economy by encouraging peanut planting after devastation of cotton crops by boll weevils.

 

1942 - Received the Roosevelt Medal, an award for Outstanding Contribution to Southern Agriculture.

 

1943 - Died of complication (anemia) when he fell from the stairs on the 5th of January.
