1916 - He was born in Sacramento, California, on the 3rd of April.

1936 - Caen worked for the San Francisco Chronicle.

1938 - Caen published his column "It's News to me," which gave him fame.

1949 - He published his collection of essays entitled Baghdad-by-the-Bay.

1950 - He wrote for the San Francisco Examiner.

1958-1997 - He served again as columnist for The San Francisco Chronicle.

         - He coined the term "beatnik" in his 2nd of April, column.

1967 - He popularized the word "hippie" during San Francisco's Summer of Love.

1996 - He received a special award from the Pulitzer Prize board.

1997 - He died on the 1st of February of lung cancer in San Francisco.
