1915 – He was born on the 10th day of June this year in Lachine, Quebec, now part of Montreal, shortly after his parents had emigrated from St. Petersburg, Russia.

 

1930 – He was part of the Chicago branch of the WPA Writer's Project, which included Chicago literary luminaries as Richard Wright and Nelson Algren.

 

1944 – During World War II, he joined the merchant marine and during his service, he completed his first novel, "Dangling Man."

 

1953 – He wrote most of his best-known novel, “The Adventures of Augie” in March of this year.

 

1976 - He won the Nobel Prize in Literature this year.

 

1988 – He won the National Medal of Arts.

 

1993 – He moved from Chicago to Brookline, Massachusetts.

 

2005 – He died in Massachusetts at age 89. He is buried at the Jewish cemetery in Brattleboro, Vermont.
