1981 - Married to Siri Hustvedt.

1985-1992 - Author of the books City of Glass, Ghosts, The Locked Room, In The Country of Last Things, Moon Palace, The Music of Chance, Leviathan and The Red Notebook.

1993 - Appeared in The Music of Chance.

         - Received Prix Médicis étranger for Leviathan.

1994 - He wrote Mr. Vertigo.

1995 - Director of the film Blue in the Face.

1998 - He directed the film Lulu on the Bridge.

2002-2003 - Wrote the books The Book of Illusions and Oracle Night.
